Let’s be honest…
Barbadians love sweet things. Sweetbread, pone, a cold Banks or sweet drink are all wired into our food culture. So much so that people write home about them. “Bring me lil’ sweetbread nuh?” is the cry from families overseas.
From childhood, sugar marks every moment. Birthdays, church socials, paydays, even heartbreaks.
Yet beneath the sweetness lies a bitter truth. Our sugar culture is costing us our health.

Studies across the Caribbean show that sugary drinks are now the largest single source of calories from ultra-processed foods. In Barbados, researchers found that these products make up nearly 40% of the average person’s daily energy intake. That means nearly half of what we eat comes from ultra-processed foods. That’s not an indulgence, it’s a dependence.
How did we get here?
Part of it is heritage.
Sugar built our economy and shaped our taste buds for generations. Add modern marketing, cheap imports, and busy lifestyles, and suddenly the “sweet life” turned into a slow trap.
But change doesn’t have to mean losing the taste of life we enjoy.
What if we kept the sweetness, but just changed the source?
Here are a few options that we could implement:-
Fresh coconut water instead of soda.
Bay leaf, lime, and mint in water instead of syrup.
Fruit instead of candy.
Cut the sugar in your tea by half. Yes, in half. Your taste buds will adjust. Less processed, more natural.
Cultural change begins with small daily swaps that honor where we came from and where we want to go. Every family, church, workplace, and school can help rewrite the story. Imagine water stations at work. Healthier options at school canteens. Fresh fruit at church socials. Together, we can make healthy the new normal, not the exception.
How about you give this a try this week: Replace one sugary drink per day with water infused with lime and mint, or fresh coconut water. Notice how you feel after a week.
